Reading for Pleasure · Ways to Inspire Reading

Carnegie and Greenaway book groups

Well, the time has come again for us to plan and run Greenaway book groups within our schools in Guernsey. We have once again chosen not to shadow these awards exactly as the real shortlist excludes our targeted groups from joining in. We have therefore decided to create our own  2 shortlists from the original long list which then allows us to use these books with year 2 and with year 5. These books were selected by our SLS staff,  our criteria was based on ensuring books were accessible to our target groups.

Schools’ Library Service Guernsey, Greenaway shortlists:-

Infants

Storm Whale by Sarah Brennan

A Child of Books by Oliver Jeffers

We Found a Hat by Jon Klassen

Lots: The Diversity of Life on Earth by Nicola Davies

Under the Same Sky by Britta Teckentrup

Juniors

Town is by the Sea by Joanne Schwartz

Night Shift by Debi Gliori

The Liszts by Kyo Maclear

Wild Animals of the South by Dieter Braun

The Song from Somewhere Else by A.F. Harrold

After Easter, we will be working with groups of students to read and explore these books. These sessions enhance literacy skills encouraging critical thinking, communication and teamwork. We will encourage all our groups to vote on a winning book for their school. These sessions end with a celebration at the Guille-Allès Public Library where we decide on a Guernsey winner. If you would like to know more please look at our post about 2017’s event.
