Grandad’s Island by Benji Davies

Everything about this book is beautiful. It’s a sign of a great picture book when it appeals to parent’s as much as young children.   At its simplest level, this is an adventure story which highlights a little boys loving relationship with his grandad.  For adults, and for children who have experienced the loss of a loved one, the story takes us through the emotional upheaval of bereavement.  The illustrations are evocative with vivid colours that are full of meaning.  They portray feelings of loss, isolation, despair but also acceptance and hope.  Benji Davies cleverly weaves little details throughout the book.  Spot the attic artefacts come to life in his jungle paradise.  I can find no fault with ‘Grandad’s Island’ – it is a heavenly book.
