Inspired by the ever popular ‘Where’s Wally’, this innovative picture book gets the youngest readers thinking about a big issue: deforestation. There are hardly any words: you just have to find the elephant, the snake and the parrot in the beautiful brightly coloured illustrations of the jungle. This starts off being quite tricky, as they are well camouflaged. But as you turn the pages people start to cut down the trees to make way for cars, crops and houses, and soon the animals have nowhere to hide. What will snake, parrot and elephant do now? Barroux’s solution is probably not a realistic one, but is a happy ending to a book that deals with a serious issue in an appropriate way for a picture book reader. I really liked the illustrator’s style and his use of colour, and this would be a great way to get younger children thinking about their world, and understanding the importance of saving the rainforest.
